Ummm, ahhhh..., er...;-)
Alas, most Nikkor zooms do not hold correct focus when zoomed,
and should therefore be focused at the FL used (advice in the
instruction booklets notwithstanding...).
The second suggestion would be a good one if the lens focused
correctly at the 24mm end, but would not make it to infinity
at the 120mm end, since a filter with a power would have greater
visible effect with the longer FL...
If still under warranty, do send the lens to Nikon for repair.
