No, you are describing normal zoom lens characteristics - virtually all
zooms show some pincushion distortion at the long end (1/16th inch over
a 6'' span is very minor [though, of course, it would probably be greater along the edge of the frame]), and virtually all zooms change focal length with focus (that's how they accomplish focusing).
