There are several 3-chip, and a few one-chip
Mini-DV camcorders critically reviewed on my web
site, at:
www.David-Ruether-Photography.com/camcorder-comparison.htm
Included are the GL-1, XL-1, EZ30U, VX-1000, VX-2000,
TRV-900 (some of these are similar to other models,
like PV10, PD150, PD100a...). I preferred any of
the Sony 3-chip models to all of the others for
picture-quality (sometimes exception: EZ30U, but it
cannot handle low-light well), and the VX-2000 is
very hard to beat in low light (only the untried
big JVC DV500 may be able to do that...). The
VX-2000 also has the sharpest picture, and is
relatively free of negative picture artifacts
(vertical-line stairstepping, oversharpening
"halos", Moire patterns) - only the VX-1000
was better in that respect. I also liked the
GL-1 audio the least of any of the 3-chippers
tried. It's two strengths (good medium-light
performance, and 20X zoom) may still make it a
good choice for some applications, though...
