Hi Steve,
I just tried your suggestion on my Canon XM-2. There was indeed a blip of
light on the monitor!
Does this mean that theoretically I could shoot with IR light, such as the
ones used for security?

If you place an IR (visible-light blocking) filter
on video cameras without the "nightshot" feature,
it is possible to shoot IR, but the sensitivity
is so low that the picture quality is not very good,
even in bright light...
