Ritz Cameras (and others, probably) caries a Sima light that
is small and light but for the (included Sony-type NiCad
battery) - and it switches between one or both sockets
(comes with 10 and 20 watt bulbs, for 10, 20, or 30 watt
options, depending on bulb positions). I installed a jack
on the side wired in parallel with the battery terminals,
and use a cheap 6-volt gel-cell (available at "battery
warehouse" places in 4 and 7 amp-hour sizes, which are
reasonably compact) connected with the light using lamp
cord (with series fuse for safety). You can buy or build
a 6-volt charger. I also added holes to the light top to
accept a wire holder for a sewing hoop, on which I stretched
thin cloth to make the light into a large, diffuse source.
I still prefer not to use it, but when the lights go
off, it makes shooting video of nearby subjects still
possible, without annoying people (with hoop in place).
