"Truly great equipment" in tripods unfortunately starts
in the multi-thousands of dollars area... (look for used
low/mid-weight Sachtler, Cartoni, etc. - you may find a
serviceable one for $5-1500...). For "make do", the
Bogen 3221 legs (or sturdier) with the 3063 head is
OK, as is (by reputation...) the Mathews-Libec (both
are under $200, and of reasonable weight and size).
Avoid cheaper tripods - a sticky "fluid" head is
truly annoying...
