We have both Premiere 5.1a and MS Pro 5.2, and I just do not
understand the basis for the comment above...;-)
Personal preferences, I suppose, but I find P-5.1 easier
to use than MSP-5.2 (operating them in the same way - I
get rid of the second preview window in Premiere and do
all editing operations from the timeline, using the
preview window as just that...).
Perhaps if the original poster got some basic instruction
in P-5.1 (an "A-ha!" or two may be all that is needed...;-),
Premiere would serve him well.
(email to the original poster - original post not included:)
Additional:
I set up Premiere as a time-line editing system (the clip
window seems way too awkward for my way of working). With
a good choice of timeline image size, working with the
film-strip representation is useful. Knowing how to move
easily on the timeline (the Navigator is great!), changing scales
quickly (10-sec, 4-sec, 1-sec, 8-frames, and 1-frame are the
most useful for me), and work-area manipulation are the basics
(in addition to correct program settings - none too obvious, alas...).
A friend got me started, and once I saw a few tricks (how to quickly
manipulate the work-area bar [not easy in MSP 5.2, BTW...],
open/close tracks, etc.), it all became easy. If you are in DV, it
seems odd to go out of it, edit, and then back into it when you
now have the advantage of a lossless editing system... BTW, one
very useful addition with P-5.1a is a second monitor - the
program does not lay out well on a single 17" (or less) monitor - W98
and a second card (ATI cards work well for this) or perhaps the single
Matrox G400 card with NT (I have not tried this...) are necessary for
this, though... Good luck with it!
