Depends.............;-)
A very few "off-brand" lenses are about as good as
the "other-than-bottom-end-el-cheapo-AF-Nikkors"
(see: www.David-Ruether-Photography.com/slemn.html for
some of these, mostly Sigma, Tamron, and Tokina).
BTW, used Nikkors can represent better value in
terms of image quality and resale price (you can
often buy a used Nikkor, use it for a few years,
and sell it for what you paid, making its use
"free"...).
