It is a better image-sharpener than the edge-sharpening filter
normally found (which can leave repeating ghost edges, if overdone).
The unsharp mask increases local contrasts with few ill effects,
giving a sharper-looking image without the "outlined" look of
most sharpening. Overdone, it can give a "patterned" look to
the image, though. Sometimes it is useful to combine both types of
sharpening to add their effects for maximum sharpening while
minimizing the ills... (BTW, most of the still images on my web
page combine both sharpening types.)
