It may work - until the camera electronics get fried. Most non-TTL
flashes switch at high voltage, most TTL flashes switch at less than
10 volts - which is why some camera instruction books specify their
own brand of flashes. (Though other brand TTL flashes can be used safely, the assumption is, I assume, that some users will not know
a TTL flash from a non-TTL flash before disaster strikes.) BTW, the
Vivitar 285 is one non-TTL flash that switches at low voltage, and
is an excellent value.
