It works fine on most bodies if you rotate the foot before trying to mount the lens, then you can rotate it afterwards for either vertical or horizontal photos. If this does not work, I am mystified...;-)

If you use a ball head and a quick-release plate, this is may not be
a problem. If not, the mirror is so short and light that using the
tripod socket on the body instead of the lens works fine. Some of
older Nikkor 500's did allow removing the foot easily by removing
two screws. If you remove it, it is a good idea to replace the
screws (with spacers added) to close up the lens rear.
