I would look for the excellent early 70-210mm f4 (constant) AF Nikkor
(or an E-Series version - same optics), or a used 80-200mm f2.8
Nikkor (any version). Or try the new compact 70-300mm Nikkor (I haven't
found one to try yet...). Speed is important with teles, though, and
f5.6 is getting kinda marginal in the 200-300mm area...
