I think you have answered your own question with the last one...;-)
Spot metering is the quick route to poor exposure unless you know
how to use it, are willing to spend the time to use it properly,
have the experience to take short-cuts with it, and/or are shooting
under unusually difficult conditions which require a spot meter
for ANY useable metering, whether exactly right or not...
Center-weighted metering is more reliable most of the time,
for most people, I think... (If you do choose to use it, it is
good to remember that a properly-calibrated meter/camera/film-ASA
combination will give you middle-grey on the film from any subject
tone metered.)
