It is a common problem with mini-DV camcorders, especially
the less expensive ones, though there are several that have
overcome the problem. In my review of several mini-DV
camcorders (on my web page, under "I babble") I try to
give some idea of the level and type of each camcorder's
noise background in a quiet room, plus an idea of its
overall sound tonal balance ("color") and auto-level.
1/2 of video is sound, so I consider it about as important
as the picture... (maybe a left-over from my audiomania
past...;-).

1/2 of video is sound, so I consider it about as important
as the picture... (maybe a left-over from my audiomania
past...;-). A small external mic can often be mounted on
the camera to reduce the noise level, though that defeats
the compact size and simplicity of packing advantages
of the smallest camcorders, the ones most likely to
have a problem with noise-pickup...
