I think Adobe set it up wrong for the average user - the
dual window operation is not very obvious or useful for
some of us. Reduce that window to a single preview window,
set the size to 720x480 if you have the space, and reduce
its borders to minimum. Select film-strip display of clips
on the timeline (sized not too large, but large enough to
get an idea what is in the clips while working). Get some
basic-operating info from someone who uses Premiere, or
the book (not much info is needed to start), and dig in!
The program is fairly simple to use once you have a few
basics down, but it is also capable of doing some pretty
neat complex stuff, too, when you want that. Stripped
down, Premiere operates much like most other video editing
programs (though I find using it a bit easier and more
intuitive than using most others I've tried...).
