There were specialized Nikkor (and other) micro lenses optimized
for specific (high) magnifications in this range, but retro-focus
wide-angles cannot focus very close because of their physical
dimensions (at 1:1, the subject would be inside the lens!),
though any short FL lens can be mounted backwards with a suitable
adapter (giving up the auto diaphragm). Results can be good doing
this (and magnification is high), though image quality is often
not excellent, I find.
