VERY! (Unless you don't care about controlling the
amount of flash fill [usually too much flash, if
left to "auto-fill"], or don't use it...;-)

Both a suitable body and flash are needed to use
the feature of manual control of the TTL fill-ratio,
except with the N600/6006, which can do it with any TTL
flash (this feature should be on ALL bodies!!!). With the
SB24/5/6/7/8, the TTL fill-ratio feature won't appear on the
flash read-out unless the body is compatible. BTW, I
recommend disabling the auto-fill feature when using the
manual fill-ratio feature (otherwise an unknown 0-2/3rd
stop TTL flash underexposure will be added to what you
choose).

1) Switch the flash to "Auto" and select an aperture on
the flash that is wider than the one set on the lens by
the amount of flash under-exposure you want.
2) Leave the flash in TTL and set the ASA high by the
amount of flash under exposure you want. When metering
ambient light (manual mode...), overexpose by the same
amount you set the film speed wrong (this is easier with
bodies that show +/- 1-2 stops of exposure on a scale
in the viewfinder).
