You need one of the recent bodies to enable fill-ratio selection.
If you have the flash on an 8008 or later body, first press "M" to
make the sun symbol blink (this is not essential, but without defeating
the auto-fill ratio, the flash will subtract 0 to 2/3 stop more flash, depending on ambient level, making the fill ratio variable and not predictable). Then press "sel", which should make a compensation scale
appear in the upper right of the LCD. Use the up/down buttons to select
fill ratio desired ("-1" works well for color negative, "-1 2/3" for color
slide, and "-2/3" for B&W [since the SB-24 underexposes B&W one stop
already - for full B&W flash, select "+1"]).
