You may have run across the 1/2/4-gig file limit...
Many FireWire cards permit playing the timeline out
to the camera for storage of long pieces, but if you
want to save a long piece in the computer, it may be
necessary to save it as a series of files. You do not
need to render before exporting an AVI file (that will
then happen as the file is exported), but rendering
saves export time and also gives you a preview for
spotting mistakes, saving time in correcting them.
