I would screw the step-up ring back onto a lens (it can
be removed easily with a rubber band around it, gripped
evenly around the edge with thumb and finger wrapped around
the edge) and put a rubber band around the polarizer (wide
enough to cover the whole width of the rim), and use the
even-pressure technique described above (few filters resist
this) to unscrew the polarizer. Alternatively, gripping the
polarizer as above, grab the inside edge of the step-up ring
and turn...
