Such things are F R U S T R A T I N G ! ! !, I know!!! ;-)
I suppose you have made sure to turn the camcorder on before
opening the Spark software, then before playback, checked that
tiny little box to the left of "video monitor" in the lower right
corner of the Spark display...
Also, before starting to edit for the first time, it is a good
idea to have captured a 2-gig file, then "make movie" of it
unchanged in Premiere - and to have experimented with the audio
interleave numbers in both capture with the Spark software, and
in Premiere... (in my system, "4-frames" for capture, "2-frames"
in Premiere works [and some other settings don't...], but what
works for you may be different...).
And, on the VX-1000, there are two buttons to hit together for
DV FireWire record...
