Push/pull processing is the adjusting of development times to alter the
average density of the film in an attempt to compensate for inaccurate
exposure. Or, it is the adjusting of the development time to alter
mainly the highlight contrast (and to a lesser extent, the overall contrast) of the film to better render the subject tonal range within
the available image tonal range. Pushing film to be able to use it
under lower lighting conditions than it was intended for is an emergency measure only - better results in terms of tonal quality would be had by
using faster film (and sometimes by using odd developers that can retain
reasonably normal tones with less exposure of the film).
Hope this helps.
