It is simpler than that...
-- Hitting the "enter" key will render a preview of the area
selected with the yellow bar.
-- Double-clicking the transition opens a window that allows you
to preview that transition (remember to restore sliders to
their places for proper transition operation when rendered).
-- Best of all, when "scrubbing" the time-line, you can drop the
cursor down a line (into the time-count line) - sound disappears,
but effects/filters/transitions are shown. (Hold the "alt" key
to do this in P-5...)
