I've never seen the point of either "blacking" or
"packing" Mini-DV... I do not think either is useful,
at least with Sony tape. As for the above, I make it
a practice to record blank tape for the first 20 seconds
on the tape, since this is where damage is most likely
to occur in the future, and for batch-capture, you may
need timecode ahead of first picture to capture the first
part easily...
