If the lens is not AI or AI'd, DO NOT use it on the FG! (It may break
the AI tab on the body). AI('d) lenses have ridges on the far rear edge
of the aperture ring, non-AI lenses don't. AI('d) lenses will work in all modes on the FG, I think (contrary to some 'net advice...;-). BTW, if the
AI tab is broken, or you have managed to mount a non-AI lens without
breaking it, metering will not be correct on the FG (some other bodies
do allow lifting the tab, and using the DOF preview during metering for
stop-down metering).
