Perhaps hard to find now, but Syntrillium's Cool Edit 96 was
shareware that was free with only two features enabled per
opening (the key for full use was cheap), including a really
effective noise-reduction module (included in the current
Cool Edit Pro, at a higher price... [see www.syntrillium.com
for more]). You can noise-reduce where and how it is most
appropriate, substituting (or sometimes mixing) the old tracks
for (or with) the new.
