Other than using an external mic off-camera, the cheapest
solution is the noise-reduction module in Cool Edit (it
used to be free as part of the Cool Edit 96 trial version,
dunno now [see www.syntrillium.com]), but even the
full-version of Cool Edit 2000 is cheap (around $100?).
The noise-reduction module is easy to use (see the "help"
file for preferred settings - use the ones for highest
quality), and very effective with not only steady-state
noise (what it is designed for), but it can also help
with some irregular noise, with little serious negative
affect on the sound. It is a wonderful product!
