Yes. The rear element and protecting lip extend back so far into
the camera that they nearly contact the thin shutters in the older
cameras. I haven't looked, but I suspect the double-shutter system
of the F4 is too thick, and damage could result from mounting the lens.


no - the problem is that the 8mm f/8 Nikkor jams against the front of
the viewfinder of the later Nikons because the overhang of the new
models protudes a few additional mm.

It's a 5 min. job with a file to make the 8mm f/8 fit any recent Nikon
body (which must have a mirror-up feauture of course). I have used my
Nikkor 8/8 on both F4 and F5, no problem at all.
