Using Sony cleaning tape did not remove the haze (which
caused no problems until type-2 Sony tapes were used,
when record, then playback, soon became unreliable due
to dropouts - perhaps a coincidence in timing...?).
I did not attempt alternative cleaning methods, and
I don't know if Sony repair did, since communication
with Sony is virtually impossible. Only Sony tape had
been used in that camcorder. Replacement was about
$290 about a month ago, with tax and shipping (US).
The work was excellent (short some marring on the tape
compartment door), and the camcorder records/plays
even in LP mode with playback/record compatibility
with several other camcorders I have (Pennsylvania
Sony repair facility).
