No, since most ambient TTL camera meters are above the viewing screen.
Even some that comes to mind that aren't (the Nikon F3, and the spot-meter
of the F4), become non-functional when the mirror is up, due to the loss
of the light path to the meter cell. With cameras that normally meter off
the shutter curtain, what you say is true.
