It is, alas, "normal" to mini-plug mic connections...
I clean the plug carefully, rotate the plug in the
socket a few time when installing it, and place
the wire so that I don't ever hit it while recording...
Sony does make a rather good, cheap directional mic,
the ECM-Z157. Select the polar pattern more for
tonal balance than directivity, though....
(it is quite insensitive to rear sounds at any
but the widest setting, but changes balance radically
through its range). It is quite sensitive to wind
noise, unlike the Stenheiser MKE-300.
