On my site (under "I babble") is a review article that
includes many mini-DV camcorders, and there are comments
for each on the sound quality and noise characteristics
of the sound recorded with the on-board mics - none (but
*maybe* the XL-1) records really "audiophile-grade" sound
(if your standards are not high...;-) this way, and, as
JB pointed out, the line-in is not active during picture
recording - though I suspect the line-level stages are not
very flat, either... So, the answer is no, but for video
work it is often not bad, and even very satisfactory...
