The IBM Deskstar 8 and 14 UDMA drives are fast enough for mini-DV
capture and play (there are probably several other UDMA choices for
this, also, since the minimum sustained data transfer rate needed
for mini-DV is not particularly high - and it is constant at about
3.6 MB/sec).
