Looking at specs reveals little about the picture quality
(especially resolution figures...), but, in general, the
higher the pixel count in 1-chippers, the sharper the
image - but this is often at the expense of low light range
and freedom from motion artifacts. I compare two 3-chip
and 3 1-chip Sony imaging types (read the text, since
motion artifacts are hard to show in stills...) at:

This may give you some "feel" for the differences...
