Not absolutely necessary, but you may want to try hooking
up your camcorder to a TV equipped with both input types
(these are generally switchable) and looking at the results.
I would be surprised if you could not see the difference...

The recording system is of equal quality (has the same
potential) but the camera "front end", at least of the
early D8s, was based on the generally lower-quality
Hi-8 camcorders (not that some Hi-8s, like the Sony
TR-700, VX-3, and others cannot be really good, but
late Sony Hi-8s tended to be somewhat less good...).
