For high magnification macro work (see some of the bug photos
on my web page ["Phun Fotoz-photographs"]), a single flash
mounted at the end of the lens can serve as a "softbox", due
to its relatively large light source size compared with the
subject area covered. It is easy to mount a flash on the end
of a TTL remote cord screwed onto a small ball head which is
then attached to a flat bar which is also attached to the
tripod socket in the bottom of the camera. The rig is
manageable, and provides good, soft, even light for
"hand-held" flash work. I dislike the double shadows
often resulting from using two flashes, or the too-flat
light of a true ring-light...
