Depth-of-field gets shallower with closer focus, and with wider apertures. I suspect that you are leaving the focused subject in
the middle of the photo, leaving most of the rest of a rounded
subject out of focus, due to the very limited DOF. Try focusing a subject off-center on your camera viewing screen to see if you get
sharp pictures that way - if so, the lens is probably OK.
