Only the XL-1 offers interchangeable lenses until you
get into the big shoulder-mount cameras; only the GL-1/2
offer a 20X zoom before augmentation with a tele converter;
most teleconverters are relatively poor in performance
compared with many WA converters (and the
lower-magnification teleconverters are generally better
than the higher...). If long-lens shooting is the primary
interest, the XL-1 with the adapter that permits use of
Canon AF 35mm lenses is probably the best choice, with the
GL-2 used with a good 1.7-2X teleconverter the likely
second best choice (I dislike recommending untried cameras,
but this one does look likely to satisfy your needs...).
Other primary requirements/preferences might lead you to
other choices, though... BTW, most 3-CCD cameras have a
longer "run-time" than 1-2 years...
