I discovered a neat trick for this: buy a
good light stand from a DJ supply house
(about $50 retail, $25 wholesale) - it
is sturdy, portable, tall, and has only a
single pole showing above a couple of feet.
It also comes with a 3/8" stud, perfect for
fitting the neat, cheap ($24) Bogen 3-way
head (two short lockable arms + rotation,
and the arms can be folded out to make
one longer arm...). Must be placed on a
flat, steady floor, though...
