Nikkors without the prong at f5.6 (E, AF, a couple of AIS lenses, mirror lenses, and lenses on tubes or bellows) can be metered with older bodies
using the stop-down method. This may not be correct, but I think you set
the non-AI Nikkormat meter for stop-down reading by moving the meter pin
on the camera fully clockwise, then mount the lens. Push the DOF preview
while metering. With F's and non-AI F2's, you push up on the small meter coupling pin on the meter head with a fingernail until you hear two
"clicks", then mount the lens and push the DOF button while metering.
Mounting a lens with the prong resets all of the cameras for normal
coupling.
