I would only take exception to the bit in between ">> <<":

Since the on-film resolution is less than either the film or lens resolution,
but can be improved (or unemproved...;-) by either, indicating that one or the
other is the limiting factor may not be correct... (though improving either
by a lot will tend to have only moderate effect, which is why images
on films of differing resolution with the same lens look similar, and why
on the same film two lenses of differing performance don't usually look
wildly different... (the differences are visible, just not generally extreme
[unless, of course, we are comparing edge performances of a WA zoom with
a Nikkor 20mm f2.8...! ;-]) Anyway, nice post!
