It sounds like poor printing... Try checking the film with a magnifier.
A normal 50mm f1.4 Nikkor should look sharp over most of the frame at
f1.4. Contrast improves to excellent at f2, and edges/corners should
be good by around f2.8. Mis-focus by the body's AF (not uncommon...;-)
should not result in the observed effect, since the 50mm Nikkors are
fairly flat-field. It is possible the lens is defective, and examining
the negatives with a good 8-10X magnifier should tell you if that is
the case, or if the printer is at fault.
