You don't say what kind of night photography...
If you hope to hand-hold the camera for street photography,
you will be using 800 ASA materials, a fast lens (35mm
f1.4 or f2, or 50mm f1.2, f1.4, f1.8, or f2 - or maybe a
fast 28mm or 85mm), and learned techniques for taking
low-light photos. If you will be using a tripod, 400 ASA
negative materials will provide sufficient quality for
most purposes (and reduce reciprocity and subject motion
problems, compared with using slow films), though 400 ASA
transparency materials are still not wonderful. Though
zooms are attractive for their convenience and versatility,
they are rarely very good wide-open, and wide-open is at
least a couple of stops slower than a 50mm prime lens
(which can be good wide-open). Even if you plan to shoot
at f4-f5.6, the prime will be far easier to focus and
compose with, and will almost certainly have fewer problems
with bright lights in (and just out of) the frame.
Hope This Helps
