You must have had a damaged/poor-sample of the rather
amazing Nikkor 80-200mm f2.8... I have a rather
extensive Nikkor evaluation list on my web page
(under "I babble") you may find interesting (the
numbers are based mainly on widest reasonable-
to-expect-good-sharpness stop performance...).
(In the 28-35mm area, I prefer the MF Nikkors...)
