I have (well, a 120mm filter on a Nikkor 400mm f3.5, anyway) - and no
difference with or without either the big front filter or small rear
filter could be detected in tests (except slight focus shifts). I
have seen a couple of terrible (cheap) filters, and a few Vivitar's
that were not up to par (and even these would have been fine on all
but fast long lenses), but the ill effects from using most filters
are subtle, at best (worst? ;-), I find.
