The TC14A, TC16A, and TC200/201 will fit, though only the TC14A
will provide high-quality images at wider apertures (and only
about 250mm FL) Have you considered the 75-300mm Nikkor (it is
very good, and if you do not need the speed of the 180mm, it may
be a better choice for a "hikable" long lens)? The TC200/201
can be good at an effective aperture around f16-22, but without
a tripod, that is not very useful. The TC14A is enough better
than the TC16A that I would forgo the minor length advantage.
Stopped down a bit, the 180 + TC14A can be excellent, but will
not quite equal the AF 300mm f4 Nikkor. BTW, for a hand-held
smallish hiking lens, a 300mm f4.5 EDIF Nikkor with the tripod
mount removed can be nice.
