The 60mm f2.8 Nikkor on a good 1.4X or 2X converter (stopped down)
is hard to beat for sharpness up to 2X, though the space in front
of the lens will be small. I am not fond of the 60mm for use near
infinity, unless it is well stopped down, though. BTW, AF is pretty
useless in the macro range (actually, in every range, IM(NS)HO....;-),
and the 90mm f2.5 Vivitar Series I with 1:1 adapter plus tubes,
converters, and/or achromats is also fine up to about 2X at f11-16.
If you are trying for high quality at higher magnification, the 200mm
f4 (AI/AIS compact non-macro) Nikkor with the Sigma 52mm achromat made
for their 90mm macro, combined with the Nikkor 1.4X or 2X converters
and/or tubes is excellent to a bit over 3X at f11-16.
Hope This Helps
