You are not alone with this question, basic as it seems to some of us - I
have been amazed to find even some photo writers assuming that only the
whole stops are selectable on Nikkor lenses, when ANY increment can be set
(and the meter will follow it, since the aperture pick-up on the body is
analogue [and continuously variable]). Go ahead and set f4 + 1/8th, or whatever else is required to get exactly the exposure you want.
