Sounds like the 6006 would do what you want, AND offer TTL fill-ratio
control with ANY TTL flash (the main reason for me to own an SB-24/5/6/7,
since these are needed for that feature with other bodies).
BTW, the 1/8000th second speed is a by-product of the 1/250th sync.
speed - a very useful feature... (and a reason for looking for a used
8008 or N90...[with which you will need the SB-24/5/6/7 to keep the
fill-ratio feature, darn...])

Rated power often doesn't have a lot to do with reality - I would expect
Nikon to be more conservative in their ratings. Maybe a used SB-24 would
work best for you (no "D" feature, but....;-)?
