Probably the best/cheapest flashes for older cameras (and still useable
on recent ones, if the flashes are of relatively recent manufacture...)
are the Vivitar 283 and 285 (zoom head added) auto/manual flashes. You
will need a small flash bracket to hold the flash and camera together
(the Vivitar 283/5 flashes come with a PC-connection cord, I think), or
the Nikon AS-1 shoe (converts Nikon shoe to ISO hot-shoe). Any flash set
on "manual" or "automatic" mode will work. Be sure to set the flash sync.
on the F to "X" (by lifting up the shutter speed ring and turning until
the "X" appears). The early Nikon flashes were rather klunky - Nikon
flashes have come a LONG way!
Hope This Helps
